    A good presentation of (-2,3,2s+1)-type Pretzel knot group and R-covered foliation

    Let K_s be a (-2,3,2s+1)-type Pretzel knot (s >= 3) and E(K_s)(p/q) be a closed manifold obtained by Dehn surgery along K_s with a slope p/q. We prove that if q>0, p/q >= 4s+7 and p is odd, then E(K_s)(p/q) cannot contain an R-covered foliation. This result is an extended theorem of a part of works of Jinha Jun for (-2,3,7)-Pretzel knot.Comment: 18 page

    Constructing a Social Problem: The Press and the Environment

    The U. S. daily press might seem to be in a strategic position to function as a claims-maker in the early construction of a social problem. But in the case of the manufacture of environmentalism as a social reality in the 1960\u27s and 70\u27s, the press was fairly slow to adopt a holistic environmental lexicon. Its reporting of environmental news even now only partially reflects concepts promoted by positive environmental claims-makers, such as planet-wide interdependence, and the threats to it by destructive technologies. The movement of environmental claims seems to have started with interest-group entrepreneurship using interpersonal communication and independent publication, gone on to attention in government, then finally--and incompletely--been put on the agenda of the daily press. Once on the press agenda, coverage of environmental issues may have improved. But there are some constraints, possibly inherent in the press as an institution, that limit its role in the incipient construction of some social problems

    Bond patterns and charge order amplitude in 1/4-filled charge-transfer solids

    Metal-insulator transition accompanied by charge-ordering has been widely investigated in quasi-one-dimensional conductors, including in particular organic charge-transfer solids. Among such materials the 1/4-filled band charge-transfer solids are of strong interest, because of the commensurate nature of the charge-ordering in these systems. The period-four charge-order pattern ...1100... here is accompanied by two distinct bond distortion patterns, giving rise to bond-charge-density waves (BCDW) of types 1 and 2. Using quantum Monte Carlo methods, we determine the phase diagram within the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian that gives both types 1 and 2 BCDW in the thermodynamic limit. We further investigate the effect of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions on the amount of charge disproportionation. Our results show that between these two bond patterns, one (BCDW2) in general coexists with a large magnitude charge order, which is highly sensitive to electron-phonon interactions, while the other (BCDW1) is characterized by weak charge order. We discuss the relevance of our work to experiments on several 1/4-filled conductors, focusing in particular on the materials (EDO-TTF)_2X and (DMEDO-TTF)_2X with large amplitude charge-order.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Rapid characterization of the ultraviolet induced fiber Bragg grating complex coupling coefficient as a function of irradiance and exposure time

    We report the application of optical frequency domain reflectometry and a discrete-layer-peeling inverse scattering algorithm to the spatial characterization of the UV induced complex coupling coefficient during fiber Bragg grating growth. The fiber grating is rapidly characterized using this technique to give irradiance dependent growth as a function of exposure time, thereby providing the complete characterization of the coupling coefficient in the form of a "growth surface," which is related to the fiber's photosensitivity. We compare measurements of fiber Bragg grating growth in SMF-28 when exposed to continuous wave 244 nm irradiation from 0 to 90 W cm(-2) for exposure times up to 3230 s with a selection of other fibers including high germanium concentration fiber and erbium doped fiber.     Environment sensing in spring-dispersed seeds of a winter annual Arabidopsis influences the regulation of dormancy to align germination potential with seasonal changes

    Seed dormancy cycling plays a crucial role in the lifecycle timing of many plants. Little is known of how the seeds respond to the soil seed bank environment following dispersal in spring into the short-term seed bank before seedling emergence in autumn. Seeds of the winter annual Arabidopsis ecotype Cvi were buried in field soils in spring and recovered monthly until autumn and their molecular eco-physiological responses were recorded. DOG1 expression is initially low and then increases as dormancy increases. MFT expression is negatively correlated with germination potential. Abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA) signalling responds rapidly following burial and adjusts to the seasonal change in soil temperature. Collectively these changes align germination potential with the optimum climate space for seedling emergence. Seeds naturally dispersed to the soil in spring enter a shallow dormancy cycle dominated by spatial sensing that adjusts germination potential to the maximum when soil environment is most favourable for germination and seedling emergence upon soil disturbance. This behaviour differs subtly from that of seeds overwintered in the soil seed bank to spread the period of potential germination in the seed population (existing seed bank and newly dispersed). As soil temperature declines in autumn, deep dormancy is re-imposed as seeds become part of the persistent seed bank
